Esports and Academics have long had their fates intertwined both abroad and here in the Philippines with the introduction of many various Academic Gaming Competitions. Tournaments such as the League of Legends Collegiate League, the TNC Student League, Mineski’s Cyber Collegiate League, and more recently, the Acclaim Interschool Eleague and the Visayan School League have been bringing Esports closer to students and aspiring gaming professionals to let them have a taste of what Esports is like, all while promoting the motto of Reponsible Gaming.
Today, a new hope comes for student gamers as game publisher, Garena, the brand that help bought the massive Esports title League of Legends to South East Asian shores is launching a new collegiate league in hopes to breed the country’s “Esports Scholars”, the League of Legends Varsity League.
Launched in partnership with Lenovo and Intel, the League of Legends Varisty League, also known as LVL is hoping to become the country’s first tournament to offer Esports Scholarships to its winners. But first, in order for that to happen, the league will first focus on building relationships with its partner universities and help develop the Esports Culture among University students and perhaps faculty members by providing Esports related education.
According to the report over at ESPN, 7 schools will part of LVL namely; Technical University of the Philippines-Manila, AMA University-Quezon City, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Malayan Colleges Laguna, Far Eastern University-Institute of Technology, University of Sto. Tomas, and iAcademy, with more universities and colleges to be announced, unveiled, or be part of soon as the tournament progresses.
Garena, together with its partners, will be giving away PHP 30,000 as the Grand Prize for the first LVL split, with the runner-up to take home PHP 20,000, although the biggest goal is to provide academic scholarships as prizes to the worthy Student pros, provided that in exchange they also maintain key achievements like adhering to GPA and QPI standards.
The Garena League of Legends Varsity League will launch this coming November 12, 2017.
